Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

KVC’s Intensive Outpatient Program based at Niles in Kansas City is designed for families where youth are experiencing greater behavioral and mental health difficulties than what traditional outpatient services can provide. The purpose of this program is to provide intensive and focused short term clinical services to youth so families can safely stay together and prevent out-of-home care. This program improves youth relational abilities that will correlate to family, school and community life. The format focuses on group activities and skill building and also includes individual support for the child as well as family therapy and parent education and support groups.

Program Overview

KVC’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured group therapy program that will provide services and support to youth who exhibit psychiatric symptoms and significant impairment in day-to day educational, social and interpersonal functioning. This unique program offers a much-needed intermediate level of care, serving as a bridge between residential care and a traditional office outpatient setting.

IOP is a structured therapeutic environment that will:

  • Meet three to four times a week for three hours each day,
  • Run for five to eight weeks,
  • Be facilitated by KVC Missouri staff at Niles in the
mornings and afternoons Monday through Friday

While less intensive than being admitted into psychiatric hospitalization or residential treatment, IOP helps youth struggling with dysregulation and disruptive behaviors, who need an elevated and more direct hands-on approach towards intensive intervention than outpatient therapy can provide them.

IOP is an effective alternative program for parents, youth, school counselors and other providers because of its ability to supply a wide array of specialized services in a relatively short period of time.

IOP exists to offer the critical support youth and families need in order for youth to remain in, or successfully transition back into the community.

Client groups are designed to meet individualized needs. Each group incorporates a variety of curricular goals, including practicing healthy communication, helping develop coping skills, distress tolerance, and therapeutic games.
