What It’s Actually Like to Be a Social Worker at KVC Missouri
March is National Social Work Month, and KVC Missouri is taking a moment to celebrate our boots-on-the-ground team who work hard every day to support children and families in crisis. Social work is more than just a job. It’s a calling. A calling that goes beyond job titles, playing a vital role in supporting children, families and communities. A calling that comes with emotional challenges, unpredictable days and the life-changing, meaningful moments that define success in social work.
Whether you’re just considering social work or you’ve built a career in the field, meet some incredible foster care case managers at KVC Missouri: Gabrielle K. and Zack B. They’re peeling back the curtain and sharing the inside scoop on what a day in the life of a social worker is like with KVC Missouri.
Behind the Scenes: What a Typical Day Really Looks Like
“One day you might be working on paperwork, the next day you’re out in the community with kids, and another day you’re in court,” Zack says. “No two days are ever the same.”
For Gabrielle, mornings start with a quiet cup of coffee and a deep breath before diving into her schedule. She takes a moment to review court dates and home visits while “bracing for the inevitable curveballs that never seem to wait their turn.”

After a morning spent coordinating, Gabrielle shifts into a day of connection. On paper, her days are full of what you’d expect from a foster care case manager:
- Court appearances
- Foster home check-ins
- School meetings
- Crisis calls
- Acting as liaison among foster parents, biological parents, schools, courts and therapists
But social work is anything but predictable. As Zack explains, even the most carefully planned schedule can change in an instant. “Any day working in child welfare, there’s really no such thing as a set schedule,” he says.
“You might start the day thinking you know what Monday will look like, and then one phone call changes everything. When children and families are going through some of the hardest moments of their lives, priorities can shift instantly. Ensuring a child’s safety always comes first, so you have to be flexible and ready to adapt.”
The Emotional Weight of Social Work
Perhaps unsurprisingly, social work carries a lot of emotional weight. As a case manager, you’re seeing children and families in what may be the hardest season of their lives. You’re right in the thick of the difficult conversations and family challenges, and many social workers get overwhelmed or burned out if they’re not equipped to handle the compassion fatigue.
“Resilience, I have learned, does not mean being unaffected,” shares Gabrielle. “It means being anchored.” What helps Gabrielle to stay strong in the heavy moments? She remembers her purpose: helping children and families who are feeling vulnerable and raw. She puts herself in their shoes, balancing what needs to be said with empathy for their situation. Gabrielle also emphasizes the importance of clear boundaries, which not only guard her heart but also protect the families and the integrity of her work. “The work requires learning how to hold empathy without being consumed by it,” she explains.

The realities social workers see can be extremely heavy and heartbreaking. What keeps our foster care case managers resilient ultimately comes down to preparation and partnership. Through trauma-informed training, education opportunities, ongoing support, a collaborative environment and supervisors who aren’t afraid to get in the trenches alongside their team, no social worker is going it alone at KVC Missouri.

For Zack, that support was clear from the beginning. “From my first day at KVC, I could tell this was a place that truly cares about its employees,” he says. “My supervisor checks in regularly to make sure I have what I need and that I’m taking care of myself. A lot of organizations talk about work-life balance, but here they really try to live it out. This job is hard, and leadership understands that.”
The Moments That Make It All Worth It
Social work is just as rewarding as it is heavy. In fact, our social workers insist it is even more so. They get to be there to see a family’s journey from their lowest point to their greatest victory. They get to form deep, meaningful connections with the children and families they work with and watch them grow in big and small ways. Whether it’s a child smiling at their case manager for the first time or watching a parent reunite with their child after foster care, these moments and relationships motivate social workers to keep going when times are tough.

Accomplishment isn’t always in awards or accolades. For Gabrielle, the impact comes in the quiet moments. “The child who finally makes eye contact. The sibling group laughing without tension. The first time a parent says, ‘I didn’t think I could do this, but I did.’”
What Social Workers Wish People Knew
There is a lot of stereotyping and misinformation about social workers, but what people don’t realize is how deeply these hard-working individuals care.

“Behind every policy, every court order and every form, there is a human heart beating for a different future,” says Gabrielle. “The systems matter. The standards matter. Accountability matters. But the heart of this work is presence.”
Relationships are at the heart of the work. As Zack explains, trust must be built with care and intention. “When you work with families in the child welfare system, you become a meaningful part of their lives,” he says. “Building trust is essential. That means listening to families, having honest conversations and making sure they feel heard.”
Over time, those connections can lead to real progress. “You start to see all the pieces come together,” Zack adds, “and families getting closer to their goal of being reunited.”
Social work is equal parts precision and compassion. It requires a person to be highly organized while not losing sight of the real people their work is affecting every day. Much of what social workers do goes unseen. But every bit matters — from the paperwork to the people whose lives they touch.
